Meat and Potatoes: The Beauty of a Great Steak |
Posted: June 19, 2017 |
Many people love to eat. These self-proclaimed ‘foodies’ love to learn about where their food comes from, whether it is all natural, they collect and share recipes – they live and breathe the food that they eat. However, you do not need to be a food lover to understand what most people would like for dinner each night: a delicious, well-cooked steak. But what is it about a steak that makes us all salivate? A proper steak stands above all other meats, and most other foods. The intense grilled flavor, the overabundance of its juices: you are likely drooling right now simply thinking of it. In the world of steak, bigger is better. A steak should be well seasoned but never drown in spice or sauce. The perfect combination of juicy, tender, and incredible flavor keeps many coming back again and again for this delicious red meat. There are wine connoisseurs and those who obsess over every detail of how beer is brewed. However, there is little mention of steak. Still, we remain picky about a good steak. It is not something that we can eat every day – not for lack of trying. A good cut of meat, cooked just the right way, is only hard and expensive to come by at all times. So, which types of beef make the best steak? They will speak to the grade of the steak based on quality, based on the age and marbling of the meat. Cutting itself is another factor – how it is cut will also affect its quality. The Porterhouse, for example, is often called the ‘king’ of steak because it is essentially two steaks in one – one side New York Strip, the other a filet mignon. It is best grilled and makes for a thick cut. Other popular types of steak are the T-bone, known for the shape of its bone, and the top sirloin, for those who prefer a leaner steak. While the tenderloin on a T-bone is excellent when grilled, it is also delicious when diced and made into kabobs. Flank steak remains the most popular, and the New York Strip and Filet Mignon (beautifully brought together with the Porterhouse) remain standard steak choices. You can grill rib-eye steaks quickly. Craving beef? Pick up a steak (pricey may mean well worth it), season lightly with salt and pepper, and indulge yourself. Or, if you lack culinary skill, choose one of the best restaurants in Corpus Christi, Katz 21, and peruse its many excellent dining options – you will never be disappointed.
